Lovelace (2013)

I’d briefly heard about this film through a friend that read about it in a magazine who informed me that “Amanda Seyfried is playing the role of a famous porn star who fell victim to domestic violence; oh and it has James Franco in it!”. Any film that is based on a true story appeals to me more, as after watching the film I enjoy researching the real characters and looking at other people’s articles comparing ‘the truth vs hollywood’. This was a disturbing story to read more about, and the movie seems to have only just touched upon the ghastly abuse that Linda received from her husband Chuck Traynor. *

I enjoyed the non linear narrative of the film as it enhanced the contrast of the public’s perception of Linda’s life compared to what was truly happening behind the scenes. Although, the film was slightly let down by the fact that some scenes felt rushed and probably didn’t make as much of an impact on me as they would have had they had been longer. However, considering the amount of drama that is involved in the story of Linda Lovelace it would be impossible to truly capture every aspect of the different stages in her life.

I would rate this film a 6.5/10

‘Disconnect’ (2012)

Personally, I am a huge fan of any film which involves multiple interlocking story lines such as ‘Magnolia’, ‘Babel’, and even the more light hearted ‘Love Actually’. This is the main factor that initially drew me to watching ‘Disconnect’ (Alongside the fact that Max Thieriot isn’t too hard on the eyes).

This Drama/Thriller follows three different stories including a struggling couple that have fallen victim to internet fraud, a young boy experiencing what it’s like to have been “catfished”, and a news reporter who enters a complicated relationship with a young man who exposes himself online for a living. Each story explores different dangers that we open ourselves to everyday on the internet.. I found myself become aware whilst watching the film how many times I would pick up my phone to check any notifications or reply to incoming texts. Luckily the film proved gripping enough I didn’t want or need to stay ‘connected’ to my phone throughout, and kept my eyes glued to the screen.

I watched the film with one of my friends, who is usually picky and hard to please with film choices, but she found herself getting into it, gasping and jumping at all the necessary points. For a couple of scenes she had to cover her eyes and look away, which I feel means the film was achieving the reaction it had set out to reach.

Overall the film proved very thought provoking, stressful at times, and left me in a state of reflection as I put myself in the characters shoes deciding how I would deal with each situation. Would 100% recommend ‘Disconnect’ to anyone who appreciates an intense slow motion sequence and who is in the mood for a film that will completely absorb their attention.

I’d rate this film 7.5/10
